“UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS 2010: TOWARDS EUROPEAN EXCELLENCE”
The University of Cyprus launched a major fundraising campaign on October 21 2003 under the title ‘University of Cyprus 2010: Towards European Excellence’, with the aim of enhancing its role in society by attracting potential benefactors. This is a first in the

history of the University. The campaign aims to attract philanthropic support from affluent members of society in Cyprus and abroad who wish to contribute to the enhancement of society.

The campaign is managed through a special Fundraising Office that reports directly to the Rector of the University, who has been heading the fundraising activities.

Donations from the private sector enable the University to respond to the challenges posed with the accession of Cyprus to the EU, to new conditions of a greater Europe, while by giving the Institution some degree of financial independence from state funding.  The funds raised enable the University to develop new programmes of study, improve research, further enhance the University’s relationship with business and society, enrich the island’s culture and improve the welfare of students through scholarships, awards and other means of financial assistance.

So far, the Campaign has succeeded in integrating the University with potential benefactors by establishing endowed chairs, securing funding for scholarships and fellowships, and supporting the development of the new campus

The fundraising campaign is headed by a “National Support Committee”, which acts as a think-tank, forming policy on fundraising issues while a  “Trust” is being set up to manage and invest the  raised capital and asset for the University’s  maximum long-term benefit. Membership to both bodies includes University trustees and corporate leaders from the greater community.
